“Women and Girls and Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration”
This chapter investigates when, where and why women and girls are so often excluded and/or choose not to participate in DDR programs. The authors' investigate what happens to women and girls formerly associated with armed forces and groups during peace negotiations, official DDR processes, and as they attempt to move back into civilian life, whether in their home communities or new locations. They look at the some of the gendered assumptions held by DDR planners and programmers and how those affect women’s and girls’ involvement in actual programs. Finally, the authors offer some concluding thoughts about what DDR planners and programmers should consider in designing and carrying out their programs.
