William Martel, associate professor of security studies at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, discussed recent developments in Iraq. Martel debated the need for US intervention, whether to bolster the Iraqi government and military.
WGBH: As we know, the President just said that we’re not going to be sending any troops to Iraq, but he is reviewing all options. So what’s he likely to do?
PROFESSOR MARTEL: I think the dilemma the President faces right now is that, if we do very little or nothing, Iraq is going to self-destruct. And then [we would see] the nightmare scenario that we’ve all talked about for a decade [which is that] an al-Qaeda-type group…would have the resources of some part of Iraq.
