Internships

Summer internships are a critical building block in Fletcher’s professional development process that leads to full-time employment after graduation. Recent summers have found MIB students in professional internships across the globe, building on their first-year foundation courses.  Students secure internships in the public, private, and non-profit sectors and in a diverse array of industries including investment banking, private equity in emerging markets, political risk consulting, high tech, environmental sustainability, economic development, and microfinance.  About one-third of the internships typically take place in the emerging markets, including Brazil, Chile, China, India, Mexico, Thailand, and Turkey. Government and International Organizations

Department of Energy - Washington, DC, USA

“I found my internship through the Career Services Washington, DC Career Trip. I spoke with a Fletcher alum at one of the events, and was able to submit my resume to him. My job was to perform an operational risk assessment for DOE-sponsored energy projects that received over $30 billion in DOE stimulus funding. I worked with a highly-energetic, talented team of private sector-minded individuals working within, and often times around, the confines of a weighty government bureaucracy. It provided great combination of public and private sector perspectives, and I was able to get a cross-cutting view of many different energy technologies. At the end, I was selected to present to the CFO one-on-one about a potentially high-risk project I had been monitoring all summer. My internship also worked out very well for my thesis. They wanted to keep me part-time over the course of the year to work remotely, so I suggested we collaborate on a project/ strategy paper on venture markets, which will be the basis of my thesis.”

The White House, Executive Office of The President - Washington, DC, USA

“I found my internship with the Office of Management and Budget through Fletcher’s Office of Career Services. My work involved evaluating and approving cash flow models and portfolio presentations of loan and credit programs as well as assessing risk and cost benefits of direct and guarantee loan programs . The portfolio areas I evaluated included TARP and DOE Title XVII programs with loan volumes exceeding $1 trillion dollars.

The MIB curriculum was key not only during my internship but throughout the application process. My “Petroleum in the Global Economy” class, for example, taught me how to run and read cashflows as well understand regression analysis and forecasting. This was a key part of my internship.”

United Nations Development Programme - Thimphu, Bhutan

“During my internship, I was involved in the preparation of third Bhutan National Human Development Report. I provided a team of international and national consultants with necessary research support and data analysis. I also supported the UNDP office in the preparation of the inter-agency Poverty Theme Group under the UN Development Assistance Framework.

The internship allowed me to work with an international organization with a focus on human development, which was a good match for my fields of study: Public and NGO Management and Human Security. It provided an opportunity to put both my previous professional experience and my knowledge from my first year at Fletcher into practice. Working with the UN was a very fulfilling professional experience for me, and living in a country like Bhutan was an amazing experience personally.”

UNDP Private Sector Division - New York, NY, USA
“My internship was with Business Call to Action (BCtA), which advocates that multinational corporations incorporate "inclusive business models" to have both financial and developmental impacts. My responsibilities were very diverse and included developing a social media strategy to impart knowledge about Inclusive Business models, analyzing business models to understand profit and developmental impacts, and preparing case studies of existing members and their progress.

I always wanted to see how business impacts or can impact development, so this internship was a golden opportunity to use my core financial and other business class materials in understanding whether a inclusive business model is viable or not under different circumstances. I was able to network with different people through UNDP, and some of them were early stage international ventures investors. My thesis is on a similar topic, and getting an opportunity to hear directly from practitioners was invaluable.”
