Michael Kemmer, 2014, United States

Why I chose Fletcher: As a student at that Tufts University School of Medicine, I had the opportunity to gain clinical experience in the field of global health. However, I wanted to expand my knowledge and skillset to better communicate and collaborate with other actors in the international environment - ones with whom physicians could share more mutually beneficial relationships. I felt the education at Fletcher would be ideal for that as coursework in subjects such as technology in development, violent conflict, and many others would examine the work done from non-medical perspectives which are directed at understanding problems which may later become preventable public health crises. I was also hoping to do this in a welcoming environment of future diplomats, economic consultants, international bankers, development specialists, and others that I could learn from. Fletcher has lived up to all those hopes and expectations. The spirit of a supportive and balanced global community open to challenge and change has been a daily realization of the one I sensed with great anticipation before matriculation.

On the faculty at Fletcher: While the quality of the education as a whole was something I was aware of, it was not long before I began to realize and appreciate the world class level of expertise of the faculty - who combine it with a love of teaching! The advantage of knowing that your professor is one of a handful of people with that level of authority on the subject allows you to have great confidence in the immediateness and applicability of such knowledge. Furthermore, the love of teaching, expressed quite often as personal attention to each student (many times in classes of 40+ students), makes the experience of being a student at Fletcher incredibly fulfilling and meaningful.
