Being a risk manager today requires complex skills, especially in light of recent regulatory changes and uncertainties.  What are the trade-offs, challenges and rewards as a risk manager working in a custodian bank, handling and carrying large cash balances on behalf of pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and other strategic financial customers?  Assessing counterparty risk, limit setting, implementing Basel II & III capital requirements…these are just some of  the important risk management competencies used inside State Street which plays a strategic role in the securities industry as the provider of liquidity to the big broker dealers.   In their presentation, Paul Sassieni and Aileen Barbiellini Amidei, took Fletcher on a panoramic view of State Street’s enterprise risk management function into the granular details of their day-to-day world. Attendees were able to see how this all translated into career opportunities for Fletcher international business graduate students. 

Paul Sassieni is Senior Vice President in the Enterprise Risk Management division of State Street and directs the counterparty credit approval function for State Street Global Markets and Global Treasury. He serves as the Senior Credit Approver for State Street Global Markets’ FX trading, Fixed Income, Futures Clearing and Securities Finance businesses globally. Mr. Sassieni manages a team of other credit approvers in Boston and London that support these businesses. 

Paul Sassieni’s expertise is primarily within capital markets credit risk management across a variety of business lines including foreign exchange, fixed income derivatives, credit derivatives, structured debt transactions and securitization. Mr. Sassieni has been with State Street for four years and was previously in a variety of risk management and business origination roles at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, FleetBoston Financial and NatWest Bank in the UK.  Mr. Sassieni also spent some time in the not-for-profit sector where he was the Executive Vice President of Harvard Hillel.  His global experience spans North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia.  Mr. Sassieni is a member of State Street’s Counterparty and Country Risk Committee and is a member of the Risk Management Association’s Market Risk Board.  In addition to his responsibilities at State Street, Mr. Sassieni is the Treasurer of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston.


Aileen Barbiellini Amidei manages the Financial Institutions Analysis team within the Enterprise Risk Management division of State Street.  The Analysis team, which is comprised of six full-time credit analysts covering banks, broker-dealers, municipalities, and sovereigns worldwide, supports State Street’s Network Management, Treasury, and Global Markets activities, including foreign exchange, fixed income, futures clearing, and securities lending.

Ms. Barbiellini Amidei has over ten years of financial services experience, the last four of which have been in counterparty credit risk management. She returned to State Street in 2009 after a 2.5 year stint as Senior Credit Analyst at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, where she supported the money market and derivative activities of the bank’s Treasury department. She currently covers large US and UK banks as well as major broker-dealers and hedge funds.

Ms. Barbiellini Amidei obtained her Management Economics degree from Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines) and graduate certificate in International Business and Strategy from Helsinki University of Technology. She has been a CFA charterholder since 2007 and is a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society.
