2013 Leontief Prize: “Development in Hard Times:”
The Global Development and Environment Institute will award the Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought in memory of Dr. Albert O. Hirschman and to Dr. Frances Stewart for their work on international development economics.
Albert O. Hirschman was a pioneer in the study of political economy in developing countries, most recently at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Dr. Jeremy Adelman of Princeton University will accept the award on his behalf.
Frances Stewart is the emeritus Professor of Development Economics at the University of Oxford. Her most recent work introduces the idea of “horizontal inequalities” and their role in causing conflict.
